Pop culture has tried to engrain on the male population that meat is “manly.” Only weak and frail men sustain themselves on vegetables, real men eat meat like the top predators of the food chain. Recent studies have shown that this way of thinking is actually detrimental to one’s health, male or female. The consumption of meat products increases the risk of cancer, while eating only plant based foods has shown to significantly decrease cancer cell count. Personally, I can always feel the difference after having a smoothie bowl versus a plate of steak. A meal with meat leaves me feeling heavy and unwilling to partake and much more physical activity, while a vegan meal leaves me full of energy and ready to take on whatever comes my way. I am not vegan but I do try to get most of my nutrition from either fruits or vegetables. New research has arisen showing that vegan men actually have sperm count much greater than their “carnivorous” counterparts. Testosterone levels decrease in males when meat is introduced to the body, plant based foods keep these levels high. Science is continuing to prove that a diet composed of plant-based whole foods promotes life and overall a greater well being. Athletes can implement these diets to prolong not only stamina but their overall health; possibly extending their career in their desired sport. I personally believe the only characteristics that should characterize a man are his efforts to help others and his compassion for spreading goodwill, not what he simply decides to eat.
